The Truth About Health Insurance Reform

Aug 11, 08:21 AM by Erica Pederson

I’m sure many of you have been following the health insurance reform debate as the legislation works its way through Congress. You are also probably aware of the most recent developments in the debate as Democratic Members of Congress have returned to their homes to hold town hall meetings and how right-wingers have organized themselves to seriously and disrespectfully disrupt these meetings.

There is a wealth of distorted information out there concerning the debate. It seems like opponents to health insurance reform are prepared to say just about anything, whether true or not, to delay the process and eventually kill any hopes of reforming health insurance and health care in America.

Fortunately, there are resources out there for us. The White House has recently put up a website titled Health Insurance Reform Reality Check, which addresses many of the ridiculous rumors currently floating around. I encourage you to visit it, watch the videos, and forward the videos to people that you know who are misinformed or doubt the need for health insurance reform in America.

In addition, Congressman Harry Mitchell, our congressman that represents ASU, has a Health Insurance Reform Resource Page on his website. He also has a survey that you can fill out to tell him about your thoughts on health insurance reform. Right now, every congressperson is hearing the strong voices of the few opposed to health care reform. Congressman Mitchell also needs to hear from the supporters, so that he will be able to feel comfortable supporting health insurance reform when the final legislation comes to the House floor.

Please take five minutes to complete the Health Insurance Reform Survey and tell Congressman Mitchell that you support health care and health insurance reform!

UPDATE
Read an op-ed written by President Barack Obama recently published in the New York Times, Why We Need Health Care Reform.

March4Schools

Mar 2, 09:49 AM by Erica Pederson

*** THIS WEEK’S WHAM IS CANCELLED ***

Instead, the Young Democrats will be protesting cuts to public education at the State Capitol downtown.

We will be participating in March4Schools, sponsored by the Arizona Education Association, which is predicted to be the largest mobilization of education supporters in our state’s history. We will be joined by thousands sharing their stories about the impact of budget cuts on education and showing their broad and deep support for public schools.

On Wednesday, we will be meeting at 3:15PM in the parking lot directly south of Discovery Hall. If you get out of class at 3:15PM, please hurry over as fast as possible. We will depart at approximately 3:25PM so that we can get there by 4:00PM.

Also, we will be eating dinner downtown afterwards. Please join us!

Movie Night!

Feb 24, 01:25 PM by Erica Pederson

For our WHAM (Wednesday Hardcore Action Meeting) tomorrow, we’ll be having an encore presentation of Street Fight if you didn’t get to see it last semester! It is an intense documentary that follows Cory Booker’s campaign to unseat the incumbent mayor of Newark, New Jersey. This isn’t a normal campaign, though, corruption and intimidation are all part of the game.

To see the trailer and RSVP, visit the Facebook event page.

The movie will show in Discovery Hall, Room 150 at 7:30 PM.

Bring friends and snacks! See you there!

Public Budget Hearing at ASU

Feb 22, 05:04 AM by Erica Pederson

On Monday, February 23, the Democratic Caucuses at the Arizona State Legislature will host a public budget hearing at ASU’s Tempe campus. It will be at the Ventana Room of the Memorial Union (second floor, room 241) at 6:30 PM. The purpose of the public hearing is to answer questions and receive feedback from the public on the budget currently being considered by the State Legislature for Fiscal Year 2010.

This is your opportunity to speak directly to your legislators! Unfortunately, you will not be able to speak to those actually responsible for the devastating cuts we are currently dealing with, but our Democratic Senators and Representatives want to hear what you have to say. You can RSVP at the Facebook event page.

So bring your questions, bring your ideas, and let your voice be heard.

Statehood Day Rally For Education

Feb 15, 01:41 PM by Erica Pederson

On Saturday, February 14, the Young Democrats demonstrated their support for public education at the Statehood Day Rally For Education held at the Capitol. The event was organized by the Arizona Association of School Business Officials, Arizona School Administrators and Arizona School Boards Association. There were many guest speakers, who all spoke positively and emphatically about public K-12 education in Arizona. In spirit of the holiday, valentines were collected for Governor Jan Brewer and the Legislators, all with loving messages about K-12 education.

The Arizona Education Association will be hosting another rally at the Capitol on Wednesday, March 4. They are calling it March4Schools, and it will begin at 4:00 PM. They are expecting thousands of people to attend, in order to demonstrate that public K-12 education needs proper state funds in order to survive. The ASU YDs will be attending this rally instead of holding our weekly WHAM Meeting. Again, on Wednesday, March 4, the WHAM will be canceled. Stay tuned for more information about carpools and whatnot.

Arizona's Birthday BBQ!

Feb 8, 05:58 AM by Erica Pederson

February 14th is Arizona’s 97th birthday! To some people, that day is also celebrated as Valentine’s day. Presidents’ Day is the following Monday, and then there’s Friday the 13th, as well as the anniversary of Waylon Jenning’s death.

To honor all of these holidays, the ASU Young Democrats are hosting a FREE BBQ at Daley Park of Friday, February 13, right after the Friday meeting.

Our Friday meetings take place at 3:00 PM in Discovery 150. After the meeting is over, we’ll all head over to Daley Park, which is just south of campus on College Ave. There will be a carpool from Discovery parking lot, or it’s about a 5 minute walk. Also, the ASU Young Democrats Biking Club will be riding their bikes over if anyone wants to join them.

Regular burgers, vegan burgers, and drinks will be served. If you would like to donate anything to the cause (chips, money, etc.) it is always appreciated.

You can RSVP at the Facebook event page here.

Also, remember to wear good shoes if you want to play kickball!
